Patio Furniture Covers: How to Measure and What to Look For
A useful cover fits the furniture and its storage instructions. Fabric weight alone cannot establish waterproof performance, and a loose oversized cover is not a substitute for measuring.
Measure the furniture in its covered position
For a set, arrange the chairs as they will be stored and measure the complete length, width and height. For shaped furniture, record the highest and widest points. Compare these figures with the exact cover's fit chart: some charts describe furniture dimensions and others describe the cover itself. Do not add the same allowance to every product.
Check the details that affect use
- Shape and opening: can the cover be fitted and removed without dragging over sharp edges?
- Fastenings: does the supplied fixing method suit the furniture and position?
- Water management: check seam construction, ventilation and the maker's advice about pooling.
- Storage: can you dry and store the cover when it is not in use?
Furniture and cushions may need different care
Follow the furniture manufacturer's directions too. Kettler's advice varies by material and includes exceptions to covering; a cover is not universal approval to leave every item outside. Store cushions as their own care label requires rather than assuming a furniture cover makes them suitable for winter exposure.
