Wazakura’s 8-inch hand-forged concave branch cutter is a precision Japanese bonsai tool built from S55C carbon steel for clean cuts on branches up to 13mm.
Crafted in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, this Wazakura concave branch cutter brings traditional blacksmithing techniques to modern bonsai care. The tool combines a concave jaw profile with a finely honed straight edge to reduce scarring and promote tidy wound closure on living and dead branches. Finished in a black coating and packaged in a minimalist black gift box with a gold logo, it’s both a practical workshop tool and an elegant present for gardening enthusiasts.
The concave jaw shapes the cut so the wound lands with a slightly recessed profile, which helps surrounding tissue grow over the cut more evenly. That design reduces the surface area of the exposed wood and encourages faster, neater closure. For bonsai styling, this means fewer visible scars and cleaner branch lines.
The cutter is forged from S55C carbon steel, a high-carbon grade known for holding a sharp edge. Local Sanjo blacksmiths form and temper the steel by hand using centuries-old techniques, similar in approach to traditional Japanese blade-making. The result is a compact, rigid tool that resists deformation under regular bonsai use.
This 200 mm (7.87 in) cutter is sized for everyday bonsai pruning tasks and slips easily into a tool roll or kit. It reliably trims branches with diameters from about 8 mm to 13 mm (5/16"–1/2"). At roughly 190 g (6.7 oz) and with a 25 mm cutting blade, it balances control and cutting power without being unwieldy.
The cutter arrives in an understated black gift box embossed with a gold Wazakura logo, ready to gift or store safely. The blade stopper is primarily aesthetic, while the tool’s performance comes from its forged construction and sharpened edge. Packaging and finish reflect a balance of usefulness and refined presentation.
Who is this for: Bonsai hobbyists, professional gardeners, and anyone who values precision hand tools will appreciate this Wazakura concave branch cutter. It is particularly well-suited to practitioners who prune small to medium branches and want a hardy, well-balanced tool made by experienced Japanese blacksmiths. If you need a compact, sharp, and attractively presented cutter for shaping or removing branches up to 13 mm, this tool is designed to perform.
Q: What branch diameter is this cutter best for?
A: It’s designed for branches approximately 8–13 mm (5/16"–1/2").
Q: Is the cutter hand forged and where is it made?
A: Yes — hand forged by blacksmith artisans in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
