The Olla Company Terracotta Olla Watering Pot with Lid is a large, buried clay irrigation vessel that delivers water directly to plant roots for efficient, low-maintenance watering.
This handcrafted terracotta olla is a simple, passive irrigation tool designed to save time and water by releasing moisture slowly into the root zone. Bury the olla to its neck, fill it through the lid, and let capillary action and soil moisture tension regulate water delivery. It's ideal for beds, containers, edible gardens, and landscapes where consistent root moisture and reduced surface wetting are desired.
The olla stores a reservoir of water and seeps moisture through its porous clay walls, supplying plants only what their roots absorb. This steady, low-flow irrigation often means refilling once or twice weekly for many gardens, reducing daily or constant watering chores.
Yes—because the olla supplies water directly to the root zone, less evaporates from the soil surface and runoff is minimized. Plants take up what they need, which can lower overall water use by reducing over-watering and inefficient spray or drip application.
By focusing moisture at the root zone, the olla encourages deeper, healthier root systems instead of encouraging surface-feeding roots. Because the soil surface stays drier, weed germination and growth are suppressed where the olla is doing the watering.
Place the olla close to the plant’s root ball and bury it so the neck and lid remain above soil level for easy filling. For group plantings, center the olla to serve multiple plants, or use several ollas spaced to match root zones for larger beds.
Who is this for? The Olla Company terracotta watering pot with lid is made for gardeners who want a low-effort, water-wise irrigation method—vegetable growers, container gardeners, permaculturists, and anyone with busy schedules or frequent travel. It’s particularly valuable in climates where conserving water matters or where consistent root-zone moisture improves plant performance. Practical, durable, and simple to use, this olla is a tool for anyone seeking reliable, efficient watering without pumps, timers, or complex installations.
Q: How often do I need to refill the terracotta olla?
A: Most gardens require refilling once or twice a week; frequency depends on soil, plant size, and climate.
Q: Can I use the olla for container plants?
A: Yes — bury the olla near the container root zone or place a smaller olla variant in large containers for steady hydration.
