The Spear & Jackson Razorsharp 8290RS is a heavy‑duty telescopic ratchet anvil lopper designed to cut thick, hard-to-reach branches up to 50mm with minimal effort.
Built for gardeners who tackle woody growth, this lopper combines a multi‑step ratchet mechanism with a hardened SK5 carbon steel cutting blade and a non‑stick PTFE coating to stay sharp and resist corrosion. Lightweight tubular aluminium handles telescopes from 710mm to 1030mm (28"–40½") to increase reach and leverage, while soft, non‑slip grips and a locking catch make handling and storage safer. Backed by a 10‑year guarantee, it sits in Spear & Jackson’s Razorsharp line of precision cutting tools.
The ratchet mechanism advances the upper blade toward the anvil in a series of short, controlled steps so you can cut through dense timber without forcing a single long squeeze. This staged action multiplies your applied force and keeps the cutting motion steady, which is especially useful on large, stubborn stems.
The upper blade is forged from SK5 carbon steel, a material chosen for edge retention, and it receives a PTFE coating to fight rust and reduce sap build‑up. These features keep the blade cutting cleanly between sharpenings and extend service intervals.
Telescopic aluminium handles lengthen from 710mm to 1030mm so you can prune higher branches or gain extra leverage on thick cuts without a ladder. The light alloy keeps the tool manageable while letting you apply greater cutting force thanks to the extended reach.
Safety is addressed with an integrated locking catch that holds the blades closed when not in use and reduces the risk of accidental opening. The compact closed length and modest weight make it easy to stow in a shed or garage between jobs.
Who this tool is for: The Spear & Jackson 8290RS Razorsharp telescopic ratchet anvil lopper is aimed at home gardeners, avid DIY landscapers and allotment keepers who need a dependable tool to tackle thick or hard branches without a lot of brute force. It suits users who value reach, leverage and low maintenance — anyone pruning mature shrubs, young trees or dense hedgerow growth will find this lopper especially useful. If you regularly confront woody stems up to about 50mm in diameter and want a compact, safe tool that improves mechanical advantage, this model is worth considering.
Q: What maximum branch diameter can this lopper cut?
A: The 8290RS can cut branches up to about 50mm (roughly 2 inches) using its ratchet action for thicker stems.
Q: Does the handle length adjust and how long does it extend?
A: Yes — the tubular aluminium handles extend from 710mm (28") to 1030mm (40½") for extra reach and leverage.
