Orange Rocket Barberry is a narrow, fast-growing ornamental shrub that delivers vivid coral-to-ruby foliage and low-water, low-maintenance performance for borders, containers, and mass plantings.
The Southern Living Plant Collection's Orange Rocket Barberry (Berberis thunbergii ‘Orange Rocket’ PP18411) offers season-long color transitions—from coral spring growth to scarlet summer leaves and deeper ruby tones into fall—while keeping a tidy, columnar silhouette. This two-gallon specimen arrives ready to establish, thrives in USDA zones 5–9, and fits into xeriscape and low-input landscapes thanks to drought tolerance and modest maintenance needs.
Orange Rocket develops a vertical, upright habit rather than spreading widely, making it ideal for tight spaces where height matters more than spread. Expect it to reach roughly 4 feet tall and about 18 inches wide at maturity under typical garden conditions.
Leaves begin the season as a bright coral and evolve through vivid scarlet-red in summer before settling to a deeper ruby red in fall. These successive color phases create dynamic seasonal interest and contrast well with evergreen backgrounds or pale spring blooms.
Orange Rocket is versatile: it works as a narrow border planting, slope stabilizer, mass planting, or container specimen. It tolerates full sun to partial shade and, once established, shows good drought tolerance—making it suitable for low-water designs and mixed perennial beds.
This barberry is generally low-maintenance: prune to shape in late winter or early spring, water during establishment, and avoid heavy mulching against the trunk. Note that branches bear small sharp thorns, so wear gloves when handling or pruning and place away from high-traffic walkways if thorns are a concern.
Who is this for: Gardeners seeking a compact, showy shrub that provides vertical structure and multi-season color with minimal upkeep will appreciate the Southern Living Orange Rocket Barberry. It’s well suited to homeowners designing low-water landscapes, container gardeners who need a narrow focal element, or anyone wanting a bold foliage accent for borders, mass plantings, and foundation beds.
Q: Is Orange Rocket Barberry deer resistant?
A: Barberry is generally unpalatable to deer, but resistance can vary by location and deer pressure.
Q: When should I plant the 2-gallon Orange Rocket?
A: Plant in early spring or fall; ships dormant winter through early spring for best root establishment.
