The Southern Living Hello Darlin Blueberry is an early-blooming rabbiteye highbush that produces abundant, firm, flavorful mid-sized berries on a compact 4–5' upright plant.
Introduced as part of the Southern Living Plant Collection’s Down Home Harvest Edible Collection, Hello Darlin was developed at the University of Florida to combine strong fruit quality with a manageable growth habit. This 2-gallon shrub ships dormant and is easy to place in landscapes or large containers; it sets petite, bell-shaped white flowers in spring and delivers harvests best when planted near other compatible blueberry varieties for cross-pollination. Suited to USDA zones 7–9, the plant becomes deciduous in winter and returns with fresh spring growth.
Hello Darlin maintains a controlled, upright form that reaches roughly 4–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide at maturity, making it straightforward to fit into both home landscapes and container groupings. Proper spacing helps air circulation and increases fruiting potential when multiple varieties are present.
Hello Darlin is an early bloomer, producing clusters of small white, bell-shaped flowers in spring that develop into firm, flavorful blueberries. Rabbiteye types like this one produce more fruit when cross-pollinated, so planting another rabbiteye or compatible blueberry nearby will raise yields.
This variety prefers acidic, well-draining soils and performs in USDA zones 7–9. It tolerates container culture but will reward regular watering, mulching to conserve moisture, and winter dormancy; plants ship dormant and may be trimmed for healthy transit.
Because of its upright, compact form and attractive spring flowers, Hello Darlin works well as a foundation shrub, fruiting hedge, or in edible landscapes and containers. As a deciduous plant, it offers seasonal interest: floral display in spring, summer fruit, and structural winter stems.
Who is this for: Home gardeners and small-space growers seeking an easy-care, flavorful rabbiteye blueberry that fits into compact landscapes or large containers. Hello Darlin is a good choice for gardeners in USDA zones 7–9 who want early blooming, manageable size, and reliable fruiting when paired with compatible varieties for pollination.
Q: Is Hello Darlin self-pollinating?
A: It will set fruit alone but yields improve when cross-pollinated with another rabbiteye or compatible blueberry variety.
Q: When should I plant my 2-gallon shrub?
A: Plant in late winter to early spring while dormant, or in early fall where winters are mild, for best establishment.
