The Southern Living Plant Collection Heart Throb Hydrangea is a compact, cherry-red flowering shrub that delivers season-long bloom clusters in a small, easy-care package.
This dwarf Hydrangea macrophylla variety was selected for vivid red inflorescences that open with subtle green marbling and persist from summer into early fall. Bred to stay roughly 3 feet tall and wide, it fits into containers, tight borders, and mixed beds while supplying bold color without large-scale pruning. Shipments arrive dormant in winter through early spring and may be trimmed prior to shipping to protect plant health.
Heart Throb is a small, rounded hydrangea ideal for limited-space plantings. It reaches about 36 inches tall and 36 inches wide at maturity and prefers shelter from full sun.
Expect blooms from mid-summer through early autumn. The flower clusters are notable for their cherry-red color with green marbling when they first open, adding a striking contrast against the foliage.
This cultivar is low-maintenance and does not require heavy pruning. Standard garden care—regular watering, good soil drainage, and seasonal mulching—keeps it healthy and flowering.
Who this plant is for: gardeners who want a showy red hydrangea without a large footprint. Heart Throb suits patio containers, small urban yards, foundation plantings, low hedges, and mixed perennial borders. It’s also a good pick for landscapers and designers seeking consistent color in USDA zones 5–9 where space is limited and maintenance needs to be straightforward.
