Soil Sunrise Carnivorous Plant Potting Soil Mix is a hand-blended, all-natural peat and perlite medium formulated specifically to support Venus fly traps, sundews, pitcher plants and other carnivorous species.
This custom 12-quart (3-gallon) blend from Soil Sunrise gives carnivorous plants the low-nutrient, well-draining substrate they need without added fertilizers or artificial ingredients. Unlike generic potting soils that retain too much minerals or nutrients for carnivores, this mix combines sphagnum peat moss and perlite for stable acidity, fast drainage, and improved root aeration. It arrives ready to use for repotting, container culture, and both indoor and sheltered outdoor setups.
Healthy carnivores rely on a sterile, nutrient-poor medium to encourage insect feeding and avoid root burn from fertilizers. Soil Sunrise’s hand-blended formula reduces mineral buildup and holds moisture without becoming waterlogged. The lightweight perlite fraction improves oxygen flow to roots, promoting vigorous trap and leaf development.
Repotting carnivores is straightforward with this mix: gently remove the old medium, rinse fragile roots if needed, and plant at the same crown depth. Water the pot thoroughly with distilled or rainwater to settle the mix and avoid tap-water minerals. Use a pot with drainage and keep the medium consistently moist but not saturated.
Yes—this blend is designed to be versatile for most common carnivorous genera, including Venus fly traps, Sarracenia (pitcher plants), Drosera (sundews), and Pinguicula (butterworts). It performs well in traditional pots, hanging baskets for sundews, and mixed-sphagnum top layers. Adjust potting depth and water tray height according to each species’ cultural needs.
Keep the medium moist with distilled or rainwater; many carnivores prefer a wet tray culture or consistently damp substrate. Avoid fertilizers and nutrient-rich water—carnivores obtain minerals from prey, not soil. Refresh the top layer or repot if the peat becomes compacted or discolored over time.
Who is this for: Soil Sunrise Carnivorous Plant Potting Soil Mix is tailored for hobbyists, collector growers, and anyone repotting or starting carnivorous plants who wants an all-natural, ready-to-use medium. It suits first-time growers seeking an easy, low-risk substrate and experienced cultivators who prefer reliable peat-and-perlite performance in larger bulk quantities.
Q: Can I use tap water with this soil?
A: No. Use distilled, rain, or reverse-osmosis water to avoid harmful minerals.
Q: Is fertilizer required for plants in this mix?
A: No. Carnivorous plants get nutrients from prey; do not add fertilizers to the soil.
