Schoen Farms Bright White Safflower Seeds are a premium 7 lb (3.18 kg) bird food formulated to attract cardinals, finches, grosbeaks and doves while being less appealing to many squirrels.
These clean, white safflower seeds offer backyard birders a versatile feeding option that works in tube feeders, hopper feeders, platform trays and on the ground. Hand-packed by Schoen Farms, this 7-pound bag supplies weeks of feeding for small flocks and comes from a small family business focused on quality and consistent seed selection. Safflower is known for its hard shell and neutral oil content, making it a preferred choice for many colorful songbirds.
Safflower seed is a go-to for birders who want to target cardinals and similar species while reducing visits from unwanted visitors. Its firm outer coating and mild flavor appeal to many seed-eating songbirds but are less attractive to common squirrel and grackle pests.
Place safflower seed in feeders that match the preferred visiting birds—tube and hopper feeders are excellent for sparrows and finches, while platform feeders and ground trays suit doves and juncos. Rotate feeder placement and keep feeders clean to maintain seed quality and bird health.
Safflower seed is commonly used as a deterrent because squirrels and some larger pest birds often avoid its tough hull and bland taste. While it won’t eliminate all unwanted visitors, many backyard owners see fewer squirrel raids when switching to safflower.
A 7-pound bag provides enough seed to feed a small to medium backyard flock for several weeks, depending on feeder quantity and bird traffic. Keep the seed in a cool, dry location and transfer it to an airtight container to maintain freshness and reduce exposure to pests.
Who is this for: Schoen Farms Bright White Safflower Seeds are ideal for homeowners and hobby birders who want to attract colorful songbirds—especially cardinals and grosbeaks—while cutting down on squirrel activity. It’s also a good option for those who prefer a versatile seed that works across multiple feeder types and supports a small family business focused on quality bird food.
