Rurtsva Horticultural Pumice is a lightweight, porous volcanic rock sold in a 10QT bag to boost potting mixes by improving drainage, aeration and moisture retention for succulents, cacti, bonsai and orchids.
Using pumice in potting mixes helps create a stable, airy substrate that keeps roots healthy without waterlogging. Rurtsva's pumice is natural and organic, with excellent permeability and a reported 55% water absorption rate, making it a versatile amendment for container plants, bonsai soil blends and indoor plant topdressing. It can be mixed with peat, akadama, lava rock, perlite and other components to tailor moisture retention and drainage for the plants you grow.
Pumice adds permanent pore space in potting mixes so excess water drains away while small pores hold accessible moisture for roots. Its structure prevents soil compaction, helping oxygen reach root systems and reducing conditions that lead to rot.
Mix ratios vary by species and container. For most succulents and cacti, start with 30–50% pumice blended with potting soil or cactus mix; for bonsai or plants needing more moisture control, begin with 10–25% pumice and adjust based on performance.
Pumice works both as a top layer to reduce evaporation and as a component mixed into substrate to keep the entire root zone airy. Apply a thin top layer to pots to stabilize the plant and slow surface crusting, or blend it throughout the potting media for long-term structure.
Pumice moderates moisture, holding usable water in its pores and releasing it gradually. Many growers find they water less often—sometimes up to 25–35% less—because substrates remain evenly moist without staying saturated.
Who this is for: Rurtsva Horticultural Pumice is made for hobbyists and professional growers who want a natural, long-lasting amendment to improve soil structure for succulents, cacti, bonsai, orchids and container plants. It's ideal if you need better drainage, want to reduce compaction, or are customizing potting mixes for specific species and microclimates.
Q: Can I use Rurtsva pumice for orchids and epiphytic plants?
A: Yes. Use pumice in chunky mixes or as a drainage layer to improve airflow and moderate moisture for orchids and epiphytes.
Q: How much pumice should I add to garden soil?
A: Start with about 10% pumice by volume to prevent compaction and improve soil structure; increase as needed for better drainage.
