Planterhoma 18 Pounds Mix Horticultural Lava Rocks are small, porous 3–6 mm volcanic grit designed to improve pot drainage, aeration, and surface top-dressing for succulents, bonsai, terrariums, and hydroponic setups.
These mixed-color lava rocks give indoor and outdoor plantings a durable, low-maintenance layer that resists decomposition and supports healthier root environments. Their natural porosity helps water move through soil while trapping air around roots; the pebble-sized 3–6 mm range works well for shallow-rooted plants, decorative top dressings, and medium-fine hydroponic substrates. Supplied ready to use, the 18-pound bag covers multiple pots and projects, making it a practical pick for hobby gardeners and professional growers alike.
The porous structure of volcanic grit increases drainage and prevents soil from staying overly wet, which is especially important for succulents and cacti. A thin layer on the soil surface reduces evaporation, deters soil compaction, and limits fungus gnats.
Yes — the 3–6 mm size is versatile for many small-scale systems: it provides stable anchoring for shallow roots, allows nutrient solution flow in hydroponics, and gives bonsai soil better aeration without breaking down over time. Rinse before use to remove dust for the clearest results in enclosed displays or water-based systems.
Unlike organic mulches, volcanic rock is inorganic and won’t decompose, meaning you don’t have to replace it seasonally. It stays chemically inert in most potting media and retains its texture, so it keeps providing drainage and aesthetic value for years.
Who is this product for? Planterhoma mixed horticultural lava rocks are made for plant lovers who want a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution to improve soil drainage, reduce surface evaporation, and add visual appeal. They suit succulent and cactus growers, bonsai enthusiasts, terrarium creators, hydroponic hobbyists, and DIY decorators who need an inert, decorative substrate. If you’re updating potting mixes, building a fairy garden, or arranging glass vases and planters, these 3–6 mm lava rocks provide functional support and a tidy, natural finish.
Q: Do I need to wash these lava rocks before using?
A: Rinse is recommended to remove dust and fines; washing ensures clearer water in terrariums and hydroponic systems.
Q: Will these rocks change soil pH over time?
A: No, Planterhoma horticultural lava rocks are largely inert and generally do not alter soil pH.
