The Orbit 57009 Pump Start Relay links a 24 VAC sprinkler controller to a 120 VAC or 230 VAC pump so your irrigation system starts automatically when the controller runs.
Built for outdoor irrigation, this compact relay provides a weather-resistant interface between common automatic sprinkler timers and a wide range of water sources — wells, ponds, or bore holes. It accepts 24 VAC control signals used by most controllers and switches higher-voltage pumps: up to 1 HP on 120 VAC circuits and up to 2 HP on 230 VAC circuits. The plastic enclosure resists moisture and the relay is cross-compatible with Orbit and other major controllers, making it a straightforward way to add pump automation to existing systems.
The Orbit 57009 uses two 24 VAC control leads that plug into the controller’s pump/master terminal or a dedicated pump start output. When the controller calls for watering, it sends 24 VAC to the relay coil, which closes the internal switch to power the higher-voltage pump circuit.
The unit is rated for pumps up to 1 horsepower on 120 VAC and up to 2 horsepower on 230 VAC, matching many residential and light-commercial pumps. Verify your pump’s nameplate voltage and horsepower before installation to ensure compatibility.
The housing is made from durable, water-resistant ABS plastic designed for outdoor irrigation environments. The relay is compatible with Orbit controllers and commonly used 24 VAC controllers such as Hydro-Rain and other major brands, providing broad interoperability.
Always follow local electrical codes: the relay switches line-voltage to the pump and must be wired accordingly. Use a qualified electrician if you are not comfortable with electrical wiring, seal cable entries to keep moisture out, and mount where the relay is protected from direct water spray when possible.
Who this is for: The Orbit 57009 Pump Start Relay is ideal for homeowners, landscapers, and irrigation installers who want a simple, weather-resistant way to automate a pump with an existing 24 VAC sprinkler controller. It’s a good fit when you have a well, pond, or other bulk water source and need the controller to start the pump automatically without replacing the controller or adding complicated electronics. If your pump’s voltage and horsepower fall within the relay’s ratings and you observe local electrical codes, this relay offers a compact, interoperable solution for reliable pump activation.
Q: Can this relay control my 1.5 HP 230 VAC pump?
A: No. The relay supports up to 2 HP on 230 VAC, so it will control a 1.5 HP 230 VAC pump—confirm pump nameplate and wiring meet local code.
Q: Will this work with any 24 VAC sprinkler controller?
A: It works with most 24 VAC controllers, including Orbit and Hydro-Rain; verify your controller has a pump/master or dedicated pump output.
