The Hydrofarm GCTB2 is a heavy-duty, self-watering tomato barrel with a 4-foot trellis tower designed to support and hydrate tomato and other vining plants effortlessly.
If you want a compact, sturdy container that supplies water from below while giving vines reliable structural support, this green Hydrofarm tomato barrel combines a built-in reservoir and a 4' expandable trellis into a single planter. It’s made to reduce watering mistakes, protect developing fruit, and concentrate plant energy on growth rather than replacing failed supports. The unit is lightweight for repositioning, yet rigid enough to hold the weight of mature plants and heavy fruit.
The planter includes a bottom reservoir that stores about 1.3 gallons (5 L) of water so roots draw moisture upward as needed. This capillary action helps prevent both drought stress and surface overwatering that can harm roots or encourage disease. It also makes watering schedules more forgiving for busy gardeners.
The barrel holds roughly 14 liters of growing medium—ample for most determinate and many indeterminate tomato varieties, as well as beans, peas, and vining flowers. The 4-foot trellis expands upward to give vines vertical room without a separate cage or stake system. Together, the soil volume and tall support let plants develop larger root systems and reduce competition for space in small patios or balconies.
This Hydrofarm model is built with a sturdy frame to hold vines and fruit without sagging, and it arrives with a round base, planter, 16 vertical risers, and 16 horizontal cross bars for the tower. Assembly is straightforward—pieces snap or slide together—so you can set it up in minutes and move it when needed. The materials are lightweight yet robust, designed for multiple seasons of use when cared for properly.
The compact footprint and vertical trellis make the barrel ideal for patios, balconies, and small yards where ground space is limited. Because the planter is portable, you can rotate crops for seasonal sun exposure or move heavy plants indoors before frost. The self-watering reservoir also reduces daily maintenance when space limits frequent visits.
Who is this for: The Hydrofarm GCTB2 is aimed at home gardeners who want a reliable, low-maintenance container for tomatoes and other climbing plants—especially people with limited ground space, busy schedules, or those who prefer an integrated trellis and reservoir system. It suits beginners wanting easier watering routines and experienced growers who need sturdy support for heavier yields without complex setup.
Q: How much water does the reservoir hold?
A: The GCTB2 reservoir holds about 1.3 gallons (5 L) of water for bottom-up watering.
Q: Can I grow indeterminate tomatoes in this barrel?
A: Yes—its 4' trellis and 14 L soil capacity support many indeterminate varieties, though very large types may need additional pruning or support.
