When irrigation draws from a pond, creek, or uses a booster pump, the electrical relay is the component that tells the pump when to run. The Hunter PSR22 is built to work with standard irrigation controllers, providing a rugged, easy-to-wire interface between 24V control signals and 120/230 VAC pumps. Its compact footprint and flying wire leads make installation straightforward whether you are retrofitting an existing system or adding a new pump start capability.
The PSR22 accepts the 24VAC control signal commonly used by irrigation controllers and switches the higher-voltage pump circuit. It mounts near the pump or inside a controller enclosure and uses flying leads for fast connections. Designed as a double-pole, single-throw device, it isolates both hot conductors of the pump circuit for safe operation.
The PSR22 is rated to control 120 VAC pumps up to 2 HP and 230 VAC pumps up to 5 HP, covering the most common residential and light-commercial booster pumps. Choose the correct model based on your pump voltage and motor size to ensure reliable starting. Always verify motor and circuit breaker ratings before installation.
Installation is straightforward thanks to the flying wire leads that remove the need for custom terminal work; simply match the relay leads to the pump and controller wiring. The PSR22’s compact package fits into standard enclosures or mounts near the pump, and its rugged internal contacts are sized for frequent on-off cycles typical in irrigation. No complex programming is required—just wire and test with the controller.
Hunter offers three PSR22 variants to match different power sources and landscape setups — select the one whose voltage and horsepower ratings match your pump. Mount the relay away from direct water exposure, secure wiring to avoid strain, and use appropriately sized breakers and conduit for code-compliant installations. If in doubt, consult a licensed electrician or irrigation professional to confirm compatibility.
Who is this for: The Hunter PSR22 is aimed at irrigation contractors, landscape professionals, and informed homeowners who need a dependable relay to activate booster pumps or manage water drawn from non-pressurized sources. It’s ideal when you require a simple 24V-to-AC switching solution rated for standard residential and light commercial pumps, and prefer the convenience of flying leads for faster installation.
Q: Can the PSR22 start a 3 HP pump?
A: Only the 230 VAC PSR22 model supports up to 5 HP; the 120 VAC model is limited to 2 HP. Match the relay model to your pump voltage and horsepower.
Q: Do I need an electrician to install the PSR22?
A: Basic hook-up uses flying leads and is straightforward, but hiring a licensed electrician is recommended for mains wiring and code compliance.
