Green Promise Farms’ Lonicera sempervirens 'Major Wheeler' is a vigorous native honeysuckle vine that delivers mildew-resistant glossy foliage and long seasons of deep-red, tubular blooms that attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
This deciduous, twining vine—sold in a #2 container and hardy to USDA zones 4–8—combines landscape durability with striking seasonal interest. 'Major Wheeler' holds its dark green leaves free of common mildew in humid climates, then produces abundant fragrant red flowers from late spring into summer. It’s a low-fuss climber that performs on fences, trellises, and in mixed native plantings while providing nectar, cover, and berries for wildlife.
'Major Wheeler' adapts to sun or part shade and forms a broad, woody climber that can reach 20–30 feet high and wide when supported. Mature plants make an effective screen or focal point, and the vine tolerates typical landscape conditions without frequent interventions.
Maintenance is straightforward: minimal pruning and occasional light trimming after the first flush will tidy the vine and encourage a healthy rebloom. Remove dead or tangled wood in late winter or early spring to keep the framework open for new growth and flower displays.
Yes—Major Wheeler reliably draws nectar feeders and supports songbirds. Tubular red flowers are particularly appealing to hummingbirds and butterflies, while later berries offer food for native birds and small wildlife, plus the vine provides shelter and nesting opportunities.
Plants ship in a #2 size container with an established root system, ready to plant when weather is appropriate. Inspect the container on arrival, water as needed, and plant in a prepared site that offers support for climbing.
Who is this for? Green Promise Farms’ 'Major Wheeler' is ideal for gardeners seeking a reliable native vine with strong visual impact and wildlife value—homeowners who want a low-maintenance climber for fences, trellises, or naturalistic borders, pollinator gardeners building habitat, and anyone in zones 4–8 looking for mildew-resistant foliage and long-lasting floral color without intensive care.
Q: What sunlight does Major Wheeler prefer?
A: It thrives in full sun to part shade; fuller sun produces the best bloom display.
Q: When should I prune this honeysuckle?
A: Prune structurally in late winter or early spring; a light trim after the first bloom boosts rebloom.
