The Holly Sky Pencil is a narrow, columnar evergreen shrub (Ilex crenata) that reaches 6–8 feet tall while remaining only 2–3 feet wide, ideal for tight spaces, containers, and vertical accents.
This compact Sky Pencil holly delivers year-round green structure with fresh light-green new growth that darkens with age. Its upright, pencil-like habit makes it a go-to choice when you want height without width: plant several in a row for a living screen, use a single specimen beside an entry, or tuck one into a large container for a tall, formal focal point. Hardy across USDA zones 6–9, it tolerates full sun to part shade and responds well to pruning at the top to set the exact height you prefer.
Growth rate depends on site conditions and care, but Sky Pencil hollies generally grow steadily to reach 6–8 feet over several seasons. Fertile, evenly moist soil and adequate light speed growth, while poor soil or deep shade will slow it.
Its slim columnar form suits narrow beds, tight borders, and patios where horizontal space is limited. Use it as a single upright accent at an entrance, grouped to form a vertical screen, or planted in a container to add height on a terrace.
Maintenance is straightforward: occasional pruning to shape the top, seasonal watering especially while establishing, and basic fertilization in spring keep it healthy. Plants are sometimes trimmed before shipping to protect overall health and make handling easier.
Yes—this cultivar holds its small, greenish leaves through winter, providing consistent structure and color in the garden. New shoots emerge lighter green and deepen in color as they mature, giving seasonal texture without a heavy leaf drop.
Who is this for: The Holly Sky Pencil is ideal for gardeners and designers who need vertical evergreen structure without a wide footprint—city gardeners with limited beds, homeowners wanting a narrow privacy screen, designers seeking formal accents, and anyone who needs an attractive, low-maintenance container specimen. Choose a 2.25-gallon plant to establish quickly in landscapes or pots; leave the top unpruned until it reaches your target height, then trim to maintain a tidy columnar form.
Q: How wide does the Sky Pencil holly grow?
A: It stays narrow—about 2–3 feet wide at maturity, making it ideal for tight spaces.
Q: Can I grow this holly in a container?
A: Yes. It performs well in large containers and is commonly used on patios and terraces.
