The Estwing Burpee Rock Pick is a 17-inch, one-piece forged hand pickaxe built for geologists, prospectors, and rock hounds who need a durable tool with a shock-reducing grip and built-in magnets for material assessment.
Designed for fieldwork and heavy-duty rock breaking, the BP500 combines a chisel-shaped blade, a pointed pick end, and three side-mounted magnets in a single forged steel head. Estwing’s molded Shock Reduction Grip minimizes impact vibration while giving a secure, non-slip hold, and the tool’s one-piece construction removes weak points found in fitted-head designs. Made in the USA from quality steel, this pick is sized for portability and power, suitable for excavation, sampling, and prying tasks.
A one-piece forged head eliminates a separate handle-head junction, which reduces the chances of loosening or breakage under heavy use. The solid-steel construction is heat-treated and shaped for consistent strength across the head and striking areas.
Estwing’s patented Shock Reduction Grip is a molded rubber handle that absorbs and disperses impact energy, cutting vibration that reaches the user’s hands and arms. The textured grip also improves handling in wet or dusty conditions.
The chisel end provides leverage for prying and splitting, while the pointed tip is ideal for breaking and scoring rock. Three side-mounted magnets help quick material checks and can catch small ferrous fragments, streamlining sample sorting.
The Burpee pick is roughly 17 inches overall, balancing portability with enough reach and swing weight for effective rock work. Its compact length makes it easy to pack while still delivering solid force per strike.
Who is this for?
The Estwing Burpee Rock Pick BP500 is designed for geologists, paleontologists, prospectors, rock collectors, landscapers, and contractors who need a reliable, field-ready pick. If you perform sample collection, rock splitting, or small-scale excavation and want a long-lasting, low-maintenance tool with improved comfort and magnetic testing convenience, this pick is built for those demands.
Q: Is the Estwing Burpee pick made in the USA?
A: Yes — the Burpee BP500 is forged and finished in Rockford, Illinois, using American steel.
Q: Can the magnets damage samples or readings?
A: The three small magnets are for quick ferrous checks and should not affect non-magnetic samples; use care near sensitive instruments.
