The Colwelt Long Handle Bulb Planter is a standing bulb-digging tool that quickly cuts 3.5" diameter soil cores so you can plant tulips, crocus, lilies and other bulbs without bending or back strain.
This long-handle bulb planter combines a serrated cutting lip, two-step pedal system and powder-coated steel construction to speed repetitive planting tasks in beds, borders and lawns. It removes uniform soil plugs up to 4.7" deep, releases the core with a raised pedal, and keeps you working upright — ideal for planting large numbers of bulbs or creating evenly spaced holes for bedding plants.
The tool uses a foot pedal and raised release pedal so you use body weight to drive the serrated cylinder into soil, then eject the core without bending. That repeated step-twist-pull cycle is faster than digging individual holes with a trowel and saves time for multi-row planting. The long handle keeps your back upright and reduces fatigue across long sessions.
The Colwelt bulb planter is designed for standard garden soils and handles common spring bulbs like tulips, daffodils, crocus, gladiolus, dahlias and lilies. It performs best in moist but not waterlogged earth; very dry or overly wet soil reduces cutting efficiency. For extremely rocky or clay-choked ground you may need preliminary loosening or a soil amendment.
Set the tool upright, step onto the foot pedal to push the serrated tube into soil, twist slightly, then press the raised pedal to eject the soil core. Rinse off dirt after use, dry the metal parts, and store indoors or sheltered to protect the powder-coated finish. Occasional light oil on moving points keeps pedals operating smoothly.
The cutter produces a consistent 3.5-inch diameter plug and reaches a maximum depth of about 4.7 inches, matching the needs of most bulb planting guidelines. That uniform size helps with consistent spacing and planting depth across a bed, making it easier to plan patterns and anticipate bloom timing.
Who this is for: gardeners who plant many bulbs, landscapers laying bulb swaths, and anyone with back or knee concerns who prefers to work standing. It's well suited to hobby gardeners updating beds, community garden volunteers, and professionals who need a durable, repeatable solution for planting uniform holes quickly. If you plant frequently and value speed, consistent hole size and reduced bending, the Colwelt Long Handle Bulb Planter is built to streamline the job.
Q: What hole size and depth does this planter make?
A: It cuts 3.5-inch diameter holes up to about 4.7 inches deep, suitable for most spring bulbs and bedding plants.
Q: Is it suitable for heavy or rocky soil?
A: It has a serrated base to help penetrate tougher ground, but very rocky or compacted soil may require pre-loosening.
